Happy Thanksgiving 2013

From everyone here at L.I.F.E., we hope you all are able to enjoy a happy Thanksgiving with your friends and family this year.

2013 marks 4 years since Eric appeared on the news for that Thanksgiving special on WLUK Fox 11.  His message was that he was very thankful just to be alive.

"It's a miracle that I'm sitting here talking to you doing this interview.  Here I am 25 years old thinking this could be the end of it all.  There's just so much out there I wanted to see and do, that was a pretty crazy 2 months or so (in reference to the bucket list)  [Achieving remission] was one of the happiest moments of my life, given the prognosis that I was given, it was unbelievable.  I'm thankful for what I have, I've got leukemia, and I've been told a number of times now I've got weeks or months to live, and I'm still here, and I'm thankful for that, and I'm thankful I have leukemia because I know somewhere else someone is having a heck of a lot worse day than I am."

Unfortunately those weeks and months had to come to an end, but we are absolutely thankful that we got the chance to have them.  His spirit will be alive at our Thanksgiving table this year.

Perhaps you or your loved one is struggling with something right now, and not just with cancer.  Take this time to embrace your friends and family, be thankful for the good things that you have in life!  And we, and all of the cancer patients you have helped, are thankful for all you have given to L.I.F.E.!

Meet Ryan Igielski - a Waukesha, WI native who used to work with Eric at Harley-Davidson.  Ryan contacted us back in June of this year to see how he could become apart of Team LIFE.  In his words "I worked on the same team with Eric at H-D so L.I.F.E. has always been very near and dear to my heart. I enjoy running and get a couple half marathons in per year along with a few other races. I ran the Madison Half over Memorial Day weekend and saw a Give to Life shirt out there and it gave me the idea to check into the idea/possibility of being able to run for a purpose. I've mostly just done running for my own personal enjoyment, but I'd love to represent a good cause along the way if I had the chance."  Ryan has set a personal goal of raising $5,000 for L.I.F.E. by the time he reaches his last race on November 2nd.  Since that day he's made considerable progress towards that goal, and has raced in a 5k, a 5 miler, and a half marathon.  This Sunday October 6th he will be competing in the 33rd Annual Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon.  For anyone in the Milwaukee area possibly wanting to cheer Ryan on - the race will start at 7:30am at Grafton High School and will head south along the lakeshore towards downtown Milwaukee and back.

  • The reason that these years have been the best is that I think that I might have had a somewhat positive impact on your lives and perhaps your understanding of what cancer is and what it can do, to both those of us that it has personally attacked and those of us who know someone who is going through it. -Eric McLean

  • Realistically, I have two more Olympic cycles in me. I'm not going to let this beat me.  I've gained a lot of strength from you guys, if Eric can fight 5 times over I can overcome this one year of setbacks.
